In Penang, Hokkien Mee refers to a spicy soup noodle dish. The soup is made from prawns, dried shrimps, pork ribs or chicken stock. The other ingredients that is served with the soup are yellow noodles (mee) and rice noodles (mee hoon), sliced boiled eggs, sliced pork, sliced prawns, bean sprout, kangkung (water spinach/morning glory), fried onion with a dollop of chilli paste.
Outside Penang, Hokkien Mee is called Prawn Mee or Hae Mee or Mee Yoke, where the name "Hokkien Mee" itself refers to a fried noodle dish which is similar to Penang's Hokkien Char.
Hokkien Mee is commonly found at hawker stalls and popular during breakfast and lunch time, but is also found in some places during dinner.
