Pantai Seafood @ Kampung Sungai Kayu Ara

Pantai Seafood Restaurant is located at Lot 13575, Jalan Cempaka PJU 6A, Kg Sg Kayu Ara, Petaling Jaya. Tel No: 603 – 7725 5099/1099.

Pantai Seafood Restaurant is under the same management as Unique Seafood (PJ) Sdn Bhd. My first time to this restaurant was on Monday and I went back again on Friday with friends for dinner. If you are completely clueless on what to order, the infamous “Jiu Da Ming Chai” (mandarin) or Nine signature Dish is featured on the first page of the menu, would be a good guide.
Poached Fresh Prawns

The first time I was here, I had the Pak Cheok Har (Poached Fresh Prawns), steam grouper fish, stir fried choy tum, steam Scotland clam with garlic, deep fried pork knuckle, fried noodles and fried rice.

On my second visit, we ordered deep fried pork knuckle, Yi Song Kai Lan (Kai Lan done two way), pig's maw and chicken in herbal sauce, steam river patin fish, tofu with beancurd and for dessert, we had black sesame "thong yun" with ginger sauce and fresh fruits.

Deep fried Pork Knuckle
The deep fried pork knuckle was served whole but once presented, it was taken away to be cut into bite sizes. The pork knuckle in Pantai Seafood is no where near the ones in New Paris Restaurant because the sauce is practically tasteless.

Yi Song Kai Lan
Yi Song Kai Lan is half deep-fried shredded "Kai-Lan" leaves with stir-fried Kai-Lan" stalks. I'd never tasted anything like that before. Find it pretty special, crunchy but I still prefer the usual stir-fried Kai Lan.

Pig Maw and Chicken in herbal Sauce
Pig maw (chee thow) and chicken in herbal sauce is pretty unique and tasty. My first time eating pig maw cooked in this sytle.

Steam River Patin
Steam river patin was great. No mud smell and the sauce is great with white rice.

Tofu with Beancurd
Tofu with beancurd is also not too bad. It's served with blanched baby Pak Choy.

Black Sesame Thong Yun
Black sesame Thong Yun with ginger sauce is my favourite.

Great company, great food and not too expensive. We are planning for the next get-together...Christmas dinner!

Restaurant Kow Siew @ Pandan Indah

Restaurant Kow Siew is located at 28-G, Jalan Pandan Indah 4/6a, Pandan Indah. It is an off shoot of the famous Restaurant Soo Kee (Tai See Tow) , fresh river prawn mee in Imbi, KL.

The price of the fresh river prawn mee (sang har mien) is really no "kow siew" (no joking in Cantonese). Read on the know why "no joke".

Sang Mien Hor Fun
A group of us (5 pax) went to the restaurant for lunch today. We ordered 1 plate of fresh river prawn mee, 2 plates of hor fun (1 plate with beehoon and kuay teow and the other, with sang mien), 2 plates of Kong Choy Sum and a pot of Chinese tea. Each plate noodle is suppose to be for 2 person.

Hor Fun
Guess how much is our bill? It came up to RM160.00 :( We were forewarned that lunch was going to be expensive but we were shocked to know that plate of fresh river prawn mee cost RM110.00! The other 2 noddle dishes cost RM15.00/plate which was pretty reasonable because there are prawns too (but smaller in size), pork slices and sang cheong.

Fresh River Prawn Mee
The fresh river prawn mee came with 2 gigantic prawns and taste really good but it's SUPER expensive! On the way back to the office, we laughed about the feeling of being slaughtered.

Hong Kong Choy Sum
I particularly like the Hong Kong Choy Sum which is cooked in a simple way with some gravy and maintaining the crunchiness. We ordered another plate after finishing the first plate. Forgot to ask how much it cost.

You need to make sure you bring enough cash if you are planning to order fresh river prawn mee. Overall, food and ambient was good.

Royce' Chocolate

Nama Chocolate
My first experince with ROYCE' chocolate was when I went to Hokkaido in June, 2010. Personally, I'm not a big fan of chocolate but my husband simply loves their Royce' Chocolate Bar. When I heard they have an outlet in Tropicana City Mall, I went to get some for him and it cost RM23.00/bar compared to RM12.60/bar at Narita airport.

When your other half loves the chocolate so much, I guess you just have to pay to satisfy their craving. In November, when Tan went to Japan, I got him to get me 10 bars! Not only I get a BIG saving but a very HAPPY hubby too :)

Mary Grace

I love ensaymadas and when Abigail came over to KL for the regional workshop on Nov 15-16, she bought along a box of ensaymadas for me from Mary Grace.

I will usually buy ensaymadas from the Manila airport on the way back to KL but after eating the ones from Mary Grace, which is absolutely yummy, I'll not settle for anything else.

Mary Grace's ensaymadas is very soft and moist. It melts in the mouth and every bite is heavenly. Baked with 100% real butter and topped with imported Edam cheese. Be very careful when opening the paper wrapping as there is so much cheese toppings.

All natural and no preservatives! It can be stored in a cool dry place if they are to be eaten within 3 days from date of purchase. If it's to be eaten beyond 3 days, store it in an air-tight container and freeze soon after purchase. Toasting or microwaving in the lowest heat for a few seconds will restore the softness.

From now on, it will only be Mary Grace's homemake ensaymadas for me :)

Saloma Theatre Restaurant - KL

We had a regional meeting in KL from Nov 15 to 16, 2010 and we went to Saloma Theater Restaurant for group dinner. Saloma Theatre Restaurant is strategically located in the Golden Triangle, within the shopping, entertainment and business hub. The buildings and surroundings provide tourist a breathtaking view of the city's skyscrapers with the backdrop of the magnificent Petronas Twin Towers. Named after the legendary actress-singer Saloma who captured the hearts of Malaysians of all ages, the Saloma Theatre Restaurant offers a gastronomic experience showcasing the flavours of Malaysia and cultural show by the Saloma Dancers.

As a native Malaysian, I do not find the food that fantastic but if you have guests from overseas, paying RM70 nett per adult for the buffet and show, is actually not that expensive as your guests get to try the flavours of Malaysia and be mesmerize with upbeat traditional and cultural performance. If they will to order the Saloma Sling (RM15++ per mug), a zesty fruit punch, they will also get to take the mug back as souvenir.

Even as a native Malaysian, I ordered the Saloma Sling so that I get the mug to remind me of the evening with the team @ Saloma Theatre Restaurant :)

Pao Xiang Bak Kut Teh

Pao Xiang String Meat Bak Kut Teh originated in Klang, a town famous for bak kut teh and they have been mushrooming all over Klang Valley. They now have outlets in:
1. Centro Mall, Klang
2. Taman Berkeley, Klang
3. Pavillion KL, KL
4. Subang Jaya, Subang
5. One Utama Shopping Mall, PJ
6. Glenmarie, Shah Alam
7. Taman Connaught, Cheras
8. Bandar Puteri, Puchong

Their BKT is different from most places as the meat is tied with strings and boiled in thick broth for hours to create the oomph flavours of herbs and spices and hence the birth of string tied meat method. Doing so, the fat in the meat will be squeezed out during the expanding of the meat, similar to the ‘massage’ process and the layer of oil can be taken out while boiling the soup, making it less oily. It also helps in retaining its juiciness and tender texture while keeping it intact in one piece.

All dishes are served in one portion bowls (RM9.50 per bowl) with fire source beneath the bowls to keep them warm. You will be spoilt for choices with different parts of the meat in the menu. To add in to the original feel of bak kut teh, the cock symbol is stamped on every tea cups, bowls and plates.

The outlet that I went to was in Taman Connaught, Cheras. Went there for lunch with my two other friends. We orderd Pu Err tea which is to be served in cute little cups (different from the type used in most shops).

My friend, Tan ordered Tua Kut (Big Bone) with chunks of meat and fat served with the bone attached.
Ernest ordered sai kut (small bone).

I ordered lun kut (soft bone) which is awesomely delicious. The meat is tender attaching to the soft bone which makes it slightly chewable.

We also ordered pig maw and intestine and "yau choy sum" to share.

Will definitely check out the other outlets in Klang Valley as Bak Kut Teh is my favorite.

Fisherman Cove - Starhill Gallery KL

Was at Fisherman Cove yesterday night for dinner with leadership team and Kevin. Fisherman Cove has very nice ambiance.

I had the Seafood Platter as the main course. It came on a big plate with lots of grilled jumbo size prawns, deep fried squid rings, steam lala and grilled fish. The prawns are fresh but the rest of the seafood are nothing to shout about. The deep fried squid rings are soggy, the steam lala are so small and has not taste, the grilled fish is so so only. Luckily it is served with special Thai chilli mayo sauce, wasabi sauce and sambal sauce.

The dish cost RM89 ++. In my opinion it is not worth. Will I come back again? Definitely not. Food is not great, costly and service is very slow.

Kedai Makanan TiTi Yong Tau Foo - Sri Rampai

Kedai Makanan Titi Yong Tow Foo is located at Jalan 45/26, Sri Rampai, Setapak, Kuala Lumpur
GPS coordinates: 3.19516,101.732787

I was invited by our Sales Director to join the ASMs for dinner at this restaurant. We ordered seven dishes; deep fried tofu, kangkung belacan, curry fish, wu thow khau yok, butter prawns, baby French beans with salted eggs and squid cooked in spices and coconut milk.

Deep Fried Beancurd
The deep fried tofu is crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. It;s tofu mixed with prawn paste and seasonings, served with special chilli sauce. Yummy.

Kangking Belacan
The kangkung belacan is fried with the right "wok hei" to retain it's crunchiness. Not too spicy. Great with white rice.

Curry Fish
The curry fish is cooked with lots of vegetable and coconut milk. Not too bad for taste, great with white rice.

Wu Thow Khau Yok
My favourite is the "wu thow khau yok". The pork is so tender and yummy. Thumbs up for this dish.

Butter Prawns
The butter prawns is also great. Could have been better if the prawns are a little bigger, easier to eat :) The dried buttery sauce is great with white rice but not good for the cholesterol.

Baby French Beans with Salted Egg
The star, "chi kok" for the night is the baby French beans with salted eggs. The baby French beans are crunchy and the salted eggs gives it the right saltiness and fragrance. Yum Yum.

Squid with Spices and Coconut Milk
The squid cooked with spices and coconut milk is nothing to shout about.

I really enjoyed dinner tonight, good food, reasonable prices and GREAT company.

Koay Teow Soup

Restaurant Soon Lee is located at Jalan Petaling 1/19, Petaling Jaya, Selangor
GPS: 3.085591, 101.646495

They sells the usual stuff as any other coffee shop but it is the Koay Teow Soup stall that draws me to the coffee shop.

The Koay Teow soup is served with sliced pork, chicken strips, springy fishball, spring onions and lots of lard (chee yau char). These days, not many stall add "chee yau char" to their Koay Teow Soup anymore but this stall still does it the authentic way. Each bowl cost only RM4.50. Yum Yum but not so yum for the cholesterol level.

Kedai Makanan Jin Man

Opening times: 5.00am to 4.00pm. Closed on Mondays.

They have branches in:
  • No. 17, Jalan M 31/M, Kota Kemuning, Seksyen 31, 40460 Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia. TEL: 603 5122 7269

I've passed by the branch inTaynton View a few times but this is the first time I actually eat in this shop. I was told that the owner has been making fishball since 1985 and uses pure 'Ikan Parang' which are filtered 9 times to make the ultra-smooth texture.

Fried Fishcake
One of their speciality is the fried fishcake which is cooked to order. The fresh and springy fishcakes are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Served with chilli sauce and some cucumber slices. Taste so good that we had to order two plates for our party of 4.

Fish Ball and Fish Maw Soup
The fishball  soup is served with a variety of noodles and you have the option of adding fish maw.

I ordered wantan noodles to go with the fishball and fish maw soup. The fishballs are ultra smooth, crunchy and fresh.  Highly recommended that you add fish maw to the fishball soup as it makes the soup taste better.

A very simple but satisfying lunch. The total bill for our party of 4 came up to RM69.00 including drinks (iced milk tea - tong teh si).

Sentosa Corner Bukit Mertajam - Yam Rice with Salted Vegetable Pork Soup

It's been a long time since I last had yam rice with salted vegetable soup. The stall that I usually go to is in Bukilt Mertajam, Kedai Makanan & Minuman Sentosa Corner.

Their yam rice is cooked with black soya sauce and lots of yam (they usually use yam which are "sang") to give the rice a nice fragrance. The yam rice can be eaten with salted vegetable soup or stew pig trotter and intestines. My preference is with salted vegetable soup.

The salted vegetable soup is a clear saltish and sourish soup. This stall makes it with the right level of saltiness and sourness.

The main ingredient for the soup is salted vegetable (kiam chye) and is usually cooked with thinly sliced pork (sam cham bak). The other optional ingredients are pork meatballs, pig's maw, liver, kidney, blood, heart, tongue and intestine. My uncle like the dish with lots of Chinese parsley. This dish is best eaten with the special chilly paste mixed with dark soya sauce.

The stew pig trotter is cooked with dark soya sauce. They also cooked pig's intestines in the same sauce. I like the stew "hoon cheong" which is chewy and powdery, minus the smell as they cleaned it very well. Ho chiak but bad for the cholesterol!

Sentosa Corner's yam rice and salted vegetable soup is highly recommended if you are in Bukit Mertajam area.

Chea Hu
Sentosa Corner is located opposite Bukit Mertajam Medan Selera. You can also get very good pasembur (chea hu) and healthier roti canai (they use less oil to cook the roti canai) in Sentosa Corner. I heard the chicken rice is also good but I've not tried it yet.
