Nyonya food was developed by the Nyonya (Straits Chinese) and Peranakan (mixed Chinese/Malay ancestry) people of Malaysia and Singapore. It uses mainly Chinese ingredients but blends them with South-East Asian spices such as coconut milk, lemon grass, turmeric, screwpine leaves, chillies and sambal. It can be considered as a blend of Chinese and Malay cooking.
When my colleagues from Philippines came to KL for the Appreciative Inquiry workshop, I decided to take them to The Curve to experience Nyonya cuisine. We chose ah Tuan ee's Place as they serve traditional north Malaysian cuisine nyonya style which will not fail to remind me of Mum's cooking.
Pai Tee |
We ordered Pai Tee for starter.
Jeu Hoo Char |
For main course, we had white rice with assam prawns, jeu hoo char (a dish made up mainly of shredded vegetables like turnip, carrot, and cabbage and fried together with thinly shredded dried cuttlefish), deep fried squid, inche kabin chicken, fried kailan, tau eu eggs and beancurd.
My Filipino colleagues enjoyed their dinner as it's not too spicy and the food is very different from Filipino cuisine. I had a good time too, enjoying nyonya food from my hometown, Penang and the company of my friends from Philippines.
